Joomla 1.6

Here at Pople Web Design we follow the progress of the diffrent content management systems (CMS) very closely, recently Wordpress has been gaining a great number of valuable and robust features bringing it close to the impressive functionality of Joomla.

One of my favorit addons to wordpress is the auto insall updates tool which is something Joomla has been missing dearly, for many of its components and its core. But with the herald of Joomla 1.6 comming out of the dark my frets about if Joomla was keeping up with the competition have been calmed. Joomla 1.6 is a huge step towards better functionality, usability and design.

Having installed it and looked at some of the new code I am overjoyed to find that it fixes many of my current little niggles about how the Joomla CMS currently works. When comparing it to the competition I can see it simply blows it away, the sheer size of the extensions database provide such a wealth of functionality that no other CMS can come close too.

My must have components of 2009 have to be Virtuemart the outstanding shopping solution, SH404 the unbeatable SEO tool, and now Community Builder. Each big names in Joomla and because they provide such powefull expansions of the Core functionality.

If your looking at which CMS to chose, I cannot recomend Joomla enough, the progressions from 1.5 to 1.6 will be almost as amazing as the change from Joomla 1 to 1.5. I cant wait for a stable release, so that we can WOW our customers even more!

Big thanks to everyone at Joomla.

What is Hosting

Hosting is a huge part of what makes a website good, and is a mandatory part of getting a website live. A website must be on a server that is constantly connected to the internet, so it can send information to any computer that asks for it at any given time.

So what exactly is hosting, and what should I look for?

Getting Into Google

'Google enables users to search the Web'

A website should have priorities, its ease of use should be at the top and one very easy way to make a site useful is ensure it is in the search engines, because that is how people use the web these days, allot of people simply don't know what a URL is, and why would they? When all you have to do to find the thing you want is pop it into google, you don't even have to spell it correctly!

If a site has not made it into google it probably shouldn't. Because the designer has obviously missed some vital steps in the production of the website. And chances are any visitor will be sorely disappointed.

Accessible Web Design

How to ensure the site you get is 'accessible website design'.

What are web standards? These are standards created by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) which govern what web designers use to create websites, by obeying the set of conventions and standards set out, a web designer can ensure that a website is easy to access by anyone regardless of their ISP (internet service provider), OS (operating system), web browser or disability.

If you already have a website you can see if the site you have been provided with meets the W3C standards by entering a your website into their website checker for valid XHTML (Extensible Hypertext Markup Language and valid CSS (Cascading style sheet).

I know it sounds like 'geek speak', it is. However you should always check that the designer you use for your site will stick to the rules and ensure that your site is accessible by everyone, not just you, and them.

What about visuals, a site can be Valid code but appear like barrel of blind monkeys has designed it. At Pople Web Design we ensure that our designs are ergonomic and user friendly, that the menus are where you expect them, and they follow good media conventions to ensure that your potential customers get he best impression they can.

The Good, The Bad, And FLASH

Flash has its place on a website, but it is only a part of a whole not the whole thing.

Adobe Flash is a program that can be used to create beautiful video based elements of a website, Pople Web Design use it in some of our sites to give it a fresh lively feel or to perform complicated tasks which otherwise would need outsourcing to a £1000 a day programmer.

One of the great things about Flash is that it is well recognized by the web surfing world, and therefore can be viewed by the majority of visitors to a website but crucially not all visitors.

Measure Twice Cut Once

Take care and spend a little extra time to ensure you get it right the first time.

This makes sense when considering ROI.

For web design and website development the phrase still applies, no one wants a site that doesn't perform in the search engines. It is a waste of time, money and effort. We recognise this and take the time to design our sites around the all important search engine optimisation from the beginning. We build our sites to be optimised towards specific keywords, those that people are likely to be searching for, this is not as some would have you believe difficult. It takes a little more time, but the owner of the site will reap the rewards ten fold as long as it is done well.

SEF Web Design

A website must be Search engine friendly if it is ever to achieve a good position in the major search engines to achieve this is should:

Use intelligible links between pages,

Should never be made in Adobe Flash,

Should never be made up of images - Because of many of the same issues related to using only Flash (mainly there is no content to index).

Should have a nice easy to use navigation system.
